We will meet at Plas Dolguog Hotel just outside Machynlleth. We will then have a short journey to Ynys – Hir RSPB Reserve. There are an exciting mixture of habitats to be explored at Ynys-hir. The estuary saltmarsh and lowland wet grasslands are excellent habitat and during the autumn and winter months this

habitat is important for Greenland white-fronted geese, golden plover, lapwing, wigeon and barnacle geese. As well as various winter migrants, in addition the area is excellent for Birds of Prey including Peregrine Falcon, Hen Harrier, Merlin and the occasional Short Eared Owl. During our visit we will explore the reserve and the special hides which are available. We will board our mini bus and head back to the Hotel for a late Xmas Lunch and a hot drink.

After lunch we will drive to Aberystwyth to look for coastal waders on the shoreline between the harbour and the pier. We will wait for thousands of starling which will come in to roost on the pier. This incredible wildlife spectacle, known as murmuration of starlings. Once the birds have settled, we will head back to the hotel.

9.00 am - Meet at Plas Dolguog Hotel

9.30 am - Leave by mini bus (Travel to Ynys – Hir Nature Reserve)

Please bring RSPB membership card if you are a member

12 .45 pm - Arrive back at the hotel for Christmas Lunch with your host Iolo


14.00 pm – Leave hotel by mini bus and travel to Aberystwyth

17.00 pm – Arrive back at Plas Dolguog Hotel
