Peregrine falcons, Falco peregrinus, are medium–large, diurnal birds of prey found worldwide, making them the most widely distributed raptor on Earth. They are easily recognised by their slate-grey upperparts, pale barred underparts, black “moustache” markings on the face, and powerful, streamlined build. Their wings are long and pointed, adapted for speed, and they possess a strong, hooked beak with a specialised notch (tomial tooth) used to dispatch prey quickly. Juveniles are browner with heavier streaking before acquiring adult plumage.
Peregrine falcons inhabit a wide range of environments including coastal cliffs, mountains, open countryside, and increasingly urban areas where tall buildings mimic natural cliff faces. Adults typically measure around 14–19 inches in length with a wingspan of approximately 3–4 feet, and weigh between 1.5 and 3.5 pounds, with females significantly larger than males, demonstrating pronounced sexual dimorphism.
They are highly specialised hunters, feeding almost exclusively on birds, which they catch in mid-air. The peregrine falcon is renowned as the fastest animal on Earth, capable of reaching speeds of over 200 mph (320 km/h) during its hunting dive, known as a stoop. During this manoeuvre, the falcon folds its wings and plunges from great heights, striking prey with immense force, often killing it instantly. Their hunting success relies on exceptional eyesight, allowing them to spot prey from long distances, combined with incredible aerial agility and precision.
Peregrine falcons do not build traditional nests, instead laying their eggs in shallow scrapes on cliff ledges or tall structures. In urban environments, they often nest on skyscrapers, bridges, and cathedrals. The female typically lays 3–4 eggs, with both parents involved in incubation and feeding the young, though the male provides most of the food during the early stages.
Did you know peregrine falcons were once on the brink of extinction in many parts of the world due to pesticide poisoning, particularly from DDT, which caused eggshell thinning similar to the bald eagle? By the mid-20th century, populations had collapsed across Europe and North America. Following the banning of DDT and the implementation of conservation programmes, including captive breeding and reintroduction, peregrine falcons made a dramatic recovery and are now a global conservation success story.
Peregrine falcons have extraordinary vision, estimated to be several times sharper than that of humans, enabling them to track fast-moving prey during high-speed dives. Their nostrils contain specialised structures that regulate airflow at extreme speeds, preventing lung damage during their stoop.
